How Much Will My PF Be at Retirement? Three Salary Examples
By Himanshu Kumar Gupta · · 6 min read
Most salaried people know their PF deduction to the rupee but have no idea what it adds up to. The answer is usually bigger than they think.
How the monthly amount is worked out
You put in 12% of basic plus DA. Your employer puts in 12% too, but up to ₹1,250 a month of that goes to the pension scheme (EPS), not your PF balance. So with a ₹40,000 basic, ₹8,350 a month goes into EPF.
The full breakdown is in our EPF explained guide.
Three examples
Assumptions: starting from zero at 28, contributing for 30 years, EPF interest at 8.25% (the FY 2024-25 rate) throughout. Illustrative only.
| Basic + DA today | Into EPF per month | Basic never rises | Basic rises 5% a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹25,000 | ₹4,750 | ≈ ₹70 lakh | ≈ ₹1.3 crore |
| ₹40,000 | ₹8,350 | ≈ ₹1.2 crore | ≈ ₹2.2 crore |
| ₹75,000 | ₹16,750 | ≈ ₹2.5 crore | ≈ ₹4.3 crore |
What moves the number most
- Salary growth. Every hike raises the contribution, and those later contributions still compound for years.
- Not withdrawing when you switch jobs. Transfer the balance through your UAN instead. On a ₹40,000 basic, withdrawing four years' PF at 32 costs roughly ₹35–40 lakh by 58.
- The interest rate. It is set every year. A 0.5% lower rate over 30 years trims the final value by roughly 8–9%.
- VPF. Voluntary contributions earn the same rate. Watch the ₹2.5 lakh yearly limit, above which interest becomes taxable.
Is PF enough to retire on?
Usually not on its own. ₹2 crore in 30 years is worth far less in today's money once you allow for inflation. Use the retirement calculator to see the corpus you need, then fill the gap with NPS, PPF and equity SIPs.
Run your own numbers in the PF (EPF) calculator: it starts from your current balance and shows the value year by year up to 60.
Frequently asked questions
- How is the PF value at retirement calculated?
- Each year's contributions are added to the balance and EPFO interest is credited once a year on the monthly running balance. The PF calculator repeats this until age 60.
- Does the employer's full 12% go into my PF?
- No. Up to ₹1,250 a month of the employer share goes to EPS (pension). The rest goes to your EPF balance.
- Should I withdraw PF when changing jobs?
- Usually no. Transfer it to the new employer through your UAN. Withdrawing loses compounding and can be taxable before five years of service.
