Step-up SIP vs Normal SIP: How Much More You Get
By Himanshu Kumar Gupta · · 5 min read
A normal SIP of ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12% grows to about ₹98.9 lakh. If you raise the same SIP by 10% every year, it grows to about ₹1.97 crore, roughly 99% more.
What a step-up SIP is
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) raises your monthly amount by a fixed percentage once a year. Most people match it to their salary hike. You invest more in total, and the extra money also compounds.
₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12%
| Yearly step-up | SIP in year 20 | Total invested | Value after 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal SIP (no step-up) | ₹10,000 | ₹24 lakh | ₹98.9 lakh |
| 5% a year | ₹25,270 | ₹39.7 lakh | ₹1.36 crore |
| 10% a year | ₹61,159 | ₹68.7 lakh | ₹1.97 crore |
| 15% a year | ₹1,42,318 | ₹1.23 crore | ₹3 crore |
With a 10% step-up, your SIP reaches ₹61,159 a month in the final year. You invest ₹68.7 lakh in total, against ₹24 lakh in the normal SIP.
How the amount rises
With a 10% step-up, the monthly SIP for years 1 to 5 is ₹10,000, ₹11,000, ₹12,100, ₹13,310, ₹14,641. Each year's amount is 10% more than the year before. The amount stays the same for the 12 months of that year.
The gap widens with time
Here is a ₹10,000 SIP with and without a 10% yearly step-up, at 12%:
| Years | Normal SIP | 10% step-up | Step-up ÷ normal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | ₹23 lakh | ₹33.4 lakh | 1.45× |
| 15 | ₹50 lakh | ₹86 lakh | 1.72× |
| 20 | ₹98.9 lakh | ₹1.97 crore | 1.99× |
| 25 | ₹1.88 crore | ₹4.23 crore | 2.25× |
The longer you stay invested, the more the step-up matters. The bigger instalments of later years still get time to grow.
Start smaller, reach the same goal
A step-up also lets you start lower. To match the normal SIP's ₹98.9 lakh in 20 years, a 10% step-up SIP can start at about ₹5,024 a month. That helps if your budget is tight today but your income will grow.
Step-up or a bigger flat SIP?
If you can afford it, a bigger SIP from day one beats a step-up. A flat SIP of ₹28,637 invests the same ₹68.7 lakh over 20 years as the 10% step-up. It grows to about ₹2.83 crore, against ₹1.97 crore for the step-up. Money invested early has longer to compound. A step-up is the practical choice when your budget grows over time.
Is the extra money real?
Part of the gain is simply more money invested. The rest is compounding on that extra money. Both are worth having. But a step-up only works if your income actually rises. If a hike does not come, pause the step-up for that year rather than stopping the SIP.
Try your own numbers
Compare a flat and a stepped-up SIP in the step-up SIP calculator. For a fixed target, start with the goal SIP calculator. For a plain monthly SIP, use the SIP calculator. To see what a ₹1 crore target needs, read how much SIP for ₹1 crore.
The figures assume a steady 12% yearly return with monthly compounding. Real equity returns vary from year to year.
